9 Style Tips for Shorter Guys

  1. Always wear monochromatic outfits

Monochromatic outfits are best to make a person appear tall since these can create an amazing height illusion. For those who don't know, monochromatic outfits are those which are of the same colour. For example, if you are wearing black pants, pair it with a black shirt. However, for a change, you can also pair the nearest shades of a colour like grey on black, blue on Navy blue, white on beige, etc.

In addition to the colour, make sure that the texture and pattern of your outfit are also the same to create a monochromatic look.

  1. Avoid baggy clothes

Baggy clothes are a big no for short men as these make your body look wide instead of long. Therefore, you should never wear baggy shirts or oversized T-shirts, as these will make your torso appear longer than your legs. Likewise, the long sleeves of your oversized clothes can hide your hands, making them look shorter than they are in reality.

The same goes for billowy or balloon pants since these look messy on a short stature. While choosing outerwear for winter, you should also avoid long, knee-length coats or loose-fitting sweaters. Whereas in other seasons, you should avoid layering as this could look too bulky for your small frame.

Note that we are not saying you should wear body-hugging outfits, but make sure your clothes are well-fitted. You can look quite handsome in half-sleeved shirts or consider folding your shirt sleeves to look edgy. The length of your upper garment should not exceed your crotch. Get trousers which reach ankle length without piling up around your feet.

  1. Wear small prints

People rarely pay attention to this but prints play a major role in deciding your overall look. If a short guy wears clothes with big checks, large motifs, or thick borders, he'll look clumsy as these prints are too big for his small stature.

Instead, you should go with scattered and tiny prints. Likewise, while buying striped shirts, make sure you select vertical stripes instead of horizontal ones as the horizontal stripes make you look wider than taller. Also, avoid wearing shirts with high graffiti patterns or colour-blocked schemes.

On the other hand, while purchasing solids, avoid investing in anything with too much texture or pattern. The smoother the weave of cloth, the less likely it will be to make you appear short.

  1. Get the right dress shirt

Remember that the higher the bunching of fabric around your body, the more it will make you look short and wide. Therefore, you should always get well-fitted or slim-fitted dress shirts. The dress shirt should be perfectly fitted around your torso, with high armholes.

Another tip here is to tuck in your dress shirt to show more of your waist and hips which in turn will boost your height. By tucking your shirt in, the extra fabric can also be hidden in the pants, creating a slim, lean, and elongating effect. However, if you are not comfortable tucking your dress shirt in, make sure it's not too long and doesn't fall two inches past your waist.

  1. Get the right pant

Choose the pair of pants which makes you look taller. For example, you should strictly avoid low-drop pants as these shorten your leg length. Similarly, try to invest in flat-front pants since pleated ones make your hips look wider, which in turn chop off your height.

Pant cuffs and pant breaks are also not a thing for short men as even a 2-inch cuff would be too much. Therefore, it's best for you to go with pants that have no break or cuff at all. Speaking of pant fit then, shorter men tend to look tall in slim-fit pants.

If possible, try wearing high-waisted pants to shorten your torso but elongate your leg area. However, if your torso is already shorter than your leg, it will end up looking even shorter, so avoid high-waisted pants in this case. A bonus tip here is that herringbone and corduroy pants help in elongating the stature, so give them a try.

  1. Get the right jacket & suit

Your choice of suit or jacket can make a whole difference in your style game. Generally speaking, short men look best in two-button, single-breasted suits. To create an elegant and aggressive impression, you may choose to get your suit in a dark colour or upward stripping.

Remember that the shoulder of your suit or jacket should be well-fitted and unpadded. You can also opt for upward-sweeping lapels instead of traditional notched ones. This way, the flared lapels will direct the attention towards your muscular torso.

Choose the collar shape and size of the undershirt as per your face shape, but avoid spread collars since they create a horizontal impression.

  1. Get the right shoes

Almost everyone knows that height-elevating shoes are widely available in the market, but in addition to purchasing such shoes, you'll also need to pay attention to some other aspects. For example, the shoe colour is very effective in making you look tall or short. If a short guy wears high-contrast shoes than the rest of his attire, he'll end up looking even shorter.

On the other hand, if you choose shoes in the same colour (or the nearest shade) as your trousers, it will create a false heightened illusion, making you look tall. Similarly, the silhouette and shape of your shoes are also very important. Since your goal is to elongate your leg, you should always invest in pointed-toe shoes instead of squared or rounded-tip shoes.

Shoes such as Oxford boots, sneakers, and brogues increase your height, whereas desert boots and Chelsea boots chop it off.

Lastly, if you are wearing shorts, your shoes should be low top - one which sits below the ankle. Such shoes will show more of your ankle, making your leg look longer.

  1. Don’t over accessorize yourself

Whatever accessory you are planning to carry, make sure it is well proportionate with your height. The general rule here is that the shorter the height, the shorter the accessories. For example, if you have a small wrist, get a small watch with a small dialer and a thin belt. Even if you are a fan of big dialers, it should not be bigger than 40mm.

The same goes for waist belts, as these should never be too wide, high contrast,  or bulky. Instead, choose a thin belt for a neat and sleek look. If you have a small or thin face, you should never opt for big glasses but try to keep the frame as minimal as possible. If possible, wear glasses with a semi-transparent or completely transparent frame. Lastly, your tie should also be thin with a thin knot and it doesn't reach below your natural waistline.

  1. Wear turtlenecks or high necks

High necks and turtlenecks create a vertical line from your neck to your ankle, making you appear tall. This piece of clothing is also best to balance out the proportions and draw attention towards the face. On the other side, you can go with v necks during summer for the very same purpose.
