How to Measure Glove Size - Larimars Clothing
Do you know that there's a thing like measuring glove size? Since most gloves are sold in standard sizes like small, medium, and large, most people don't bother to go for exact measurements and buy whatever is closest to their hand size.
However, purchasing such an ill-fitting glove may cause several kinds of problems and discomfort. For instance, a loose glove may limit your tactile sensitivity which in turn keeps you from performing a specific task to your highest efficiency.
Likewise, a too-tight glove can lead to severe hand fatigue and skin irritation. Thus, to discard these and many other similar problems, it's important to get yourself a pair of gloves which hug your hand perfectly.
For this, you'd need to learn the accurate method of measuring glove size which is, thankfully, not very difficult to fathom since all you have to do is follow some simple steps;
Measure Width
Start with measuring the width of your hand. For this, you need to wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your palm. It's usually the point right below your knuckle.
Remember that you need to make a fist by projecting the thumb in an outward direction. Wrap the measuring tape around the palm and close it in a fist. Then note whatever reading you get in inches. Also, always measure your dominant hand: your left hand if you are left-handed and your right hand if you are right-handed.
Measure Length
To measure your glove size length-wise, rest your dominant hand on a flat surface and place the starting end of the measuring tape at the tip of your middle finger. Stretch it to the base of your palm. Make sure your hands and fingers are fully flexed. Record the measurements in inches and repeat the procedure for more precise measurements.
If you don't have a fabric measuring tape, you can do the same with a non-stretchable string or ribbon. Just wrap the string around your hand circumference and tally the distance between the starting end to the marked point with a ruler or metal tape.
Translating hand measurements to glove sizes
Remember that the glove sizes are different for men and women. Also, some manufacturers don't provide the luxury of customizing gloves as per your exact sizing.
In this case, you have to buy a standard-sized glove after going through their size chart. In the chart, the exact measurements of small, medium, and large sizes are mentioned as follows;
Men's sizing
Extra small: 6.5-7.5
Small: 7.5-8.5
Medium: 8.5-9.5
Large: 9.5-10.5
Extra Large: 10.5-11.5
XXL: 11.5-12.5
Women's Sizing
Extra small: 6-6.5
Small: 6.5-7
Medium: 7-7.5
Large: 7.5-8
Extra Large: 8-8.5
XXL: 8.5-9
Besides gender, glove sizes may also vary for different designs. For instance, training gloves are mostly smaller than running gloves. Likewise, soccer gloves are made to be on the loose side whereas golf gloves are made to provide a snug fit.
Tip:
If both of your hands are of different sizes, choose gloves as per the size of the larger hand. However, if you are purchasing leather gloves, go for your smaller hand's size as leather gloves tend to stretch over time.
